A PROPOSAL FOR STRENGTHENING

JHARGRAM CRICKET ACADEMY

I.       INTRODUCTION

Be it rural or urban or cosmopolitan, cricket has undoubtedly taken place as the most popular game in each and every community in our country. And Jhargram subdivision is no exception. Cricket is played very widely as well as extensively in Jhargram and surrounding areas. Apart from friendly matches between clubs, a good number of tournaments are organized by different organizations each year, wherein overwhelmed participation of different local cricket playing bodies could be witnessed. Moreover, enthusiastic participation of the spectators is also worth mentioning. This can safely be said that there have no dearth of cricketing talents in our area and a right kind of opportunity would bring up excellent sport persons in the field of cricket.

Jhargram happens to be one of the most backward and remote subdivisions in the State of West Bengal located at the extreme western side of the state surrounded by forests and small hills. The area is predominantly inhabited by Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes population. As said to be the son of the nature these people have their natural sporting instinct and ability which is totally neglected and wasted due to lack of development endeavour, perpetual poverty and, above all, lack of infrastructure. Keeping all this in mind an Association was founded by a few sports loving persons of the area, which has set forth in its bye-laws to address some of these problems with its limited capacity and resources up to a certain extent, to raise a small ray of hope among these neglected people.

Thus, establishment of Jhargram Cricket Academy is an avenue in order to create the right kind of opportunities for the promising cricketing talents of Jhargram and surrounding areas, by giving due coverage on the requirement of infrastructure.

Jhargram Cricket Academy has launched its activities by establishing a permanent cricket-coaching centre in fulfilling a long-cherished desire of the cricketing talents of this locality. Former Indian Test Cricketer, Sri Pranab Roy, inaugurated the said coaching center on 08th May 2000.

The Jhargram Cricket Academy is a secular non-political Institution registered under the Societies Act, and the income and the property of the society whatsoever derived has been set forth to be applied solely towards the promotion of its objects as incorporated in the Memorandum of Association of the society and no portion thereof shall be paid and transferred directly or indirectly by way of dividend, bonus and otherwise howsoever by loan or profit to any of the member of the society.

II.      A BRIEF RETROSPECT

As mentioned earlier, Jhargram Cricket Academy established a Cricket Coaching Centre in May 2000. As more than two and half years have passed since then there have been certain achievements to cheer up vis-à-vis perpetual shortcomings those have been causing obstacles in promoting a seemingly viable proposition of raising the height of cricketing excellence of this locality. A brief account of such strength and weakness are furnished below.

STRENGTH

  1. Expert Coaching

It has been resolved by the Governing Body of Jhargram Cricket Academy to arrange for imparting coaching by a cricketer who participated in Ranji Trophy. Accordingly, Shri Kanu Chakraborty, who represented Bihar in the Ranji Trophy Tournament, has been selected as the Chief coach of this Coaching Centre. Fortunately, Shri Chakraborty has passionately consented to coach the trainees of Jhargram Cricket Academy as long as his physique permits.

  1. Exposure by Away Matches

The Jhargram cricket Academy has resolved to expose its trainees to as much away match practice as possible. Apart from friendly matches with other coaching centers (even of Kolkata) an all out effort is made to participate in several tournaments at places ranging from Jamshedpur to Kolkata. The trainees could get opportunity to measure their strength and weaknesses as a team as well as individually by participating in these away matches.

  1. Insistence on human faculty development of the trainees

This has been a firm policy of the Jhargram Cricket Academy to give due emphasis on the process of development of human faculty of the trainees of the Academy. The guardians of the trainees have been requested to arrange for submitting the Progress Cards of the individual trainees from their respective educational institutions for the Academy Personnel to be ensured that the trainees have not neglecting their studies on the plea of playing cricket.

Besides, a thorough vigil is kept to ensure that the trainees of this Academy remain in the process of becoming responsible citizens of the country. In order to address the issue properly regular meeting with guardians are held. Moreover, an Annual Day is observed when all the members of the Academy, Coaches, trainees & their parents (both father and mother) get together. Besides, attempts are made for the trainees to participate in social activities as a cohesive group.
